Among the gray/brown forest yet to bloom spring growth, stands alone a white flowered tree, so beautiful it almost glows with it’s dull surrounds, the Dogwood.

We banked our boat on a log connecting us to the shore.  In the woods of Sac Township, Missouri the leaves were only starting to come out and the terrain was rocky and moss covered. Very picturesque with springs leaking from random rocks. The Dogwood trees were blooming and a beautiful sight with their stark white big leaves.

The White, is technically not the flower, but a type of leaf called a bract.

There is a belief the the Dogwood is a symbol of protection or good luck.

Lore of tiny divine people that live in the dogwood tree and teach us to be harmonious with the woods.

A long long time ago, a girl  may have received a dogwood flower from a gentleman. If she kept it she excepted his offer for courting. If she was not interested in him, she would return the dogwood bloom.

The name dogwood has a few possible origins.

Dags were sharpened pieces of wood, used for meat skewers, darts and arrow shafts. Dogwood was used to make Dags. Maybe Dagwood was change to dogwood at some point in time, throw miss spelling or translation?
